How Does Color E-Paper Work?

Color E-Paper technology uses a reflective display structure that mimics the appearance of printed paper. At its core is a monochrome E Ink panel made up of microcapsules containing black and white particles that move under an electric field. These particles determine how much light is reflected from each pixel. On top of this layer lies an RGB color filter, which separates light into red, green, and blue components to create full-color images.

External ambient light—or a built-in front light—illuminates the display from above, passing through the color filter and reflecting back from the E Ink layer. This design eliminates the need for a backlight, resulting in ultra-low power consumption and excellent readability under sunlight. A TFT backplane controls each pixel’s state, enabling precise image updates.

Color E-Paper mainly adopts two common technological approaches:
