What is video brochure

At its core, a video brochure is a custom-printed folder or booklet that has a slim, rechargeable video player embedded inside it. When you open the brochure, the screen automatically turns on and begins playing a pre-loaded promotional video, often with sound.

Key components of video brochure

Before figure out how does a video brochure work, it suggests to learn it structure:

1. The Screen

  • What it is: A thin, lightweight LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screen, similar to what’s in a smartphone but often simpler.  The usual sizes of screen are 3”, 4”, 5”, 7”, 10”.

  • Its Role: This is the visual output, the window where the video plays. Screens can range from 3.5 inches to 10 inches or more, depending on the brochure’s size.

2. The Printed Circuit Board (PCB) & Media Player Chip

  • What it is: The “brain” of the operation. This is a small, specialized chipset designed for one primary function: decoding a video file from memory and sending the signal to the screen.

  • Its Role: It’s a minimalist computer. It doesn’t run a complex operating system like Windows or Android; it’s firmware-based, making it efficient, low-power, and single-purpose.

3. The Memory Storage

  • What it is: Either built-in flash memory or a microSD card slot.

  • Its Role: This is where the video file is permanently stored. The video is loaded onto this memory during production. Using a microSD card allows for easier updating of the content before the brochure is sealed.

4. The Battery

  • What it is: A thin, flexible, rechargeable Lithium-Polymer (Li-Po) battery.

  • Its Role: To provide power to the entire system without needing an external power cord. These batteries are chosen for their ability to be made very flat.

5. The Activation Switch

  • What it is: This is a crucial part of the “magic.” It’s most commonly a reed switch (a magnetic sensor) or a simple physical push-button switch.

  • Its Role: To automatically turn the device on when the brochure is opened.

    • Reed Switch Method: A small magnet is embedded in one side of the brochure cover, and the reed switch is on the opposite side. When the brochure is closed, the magnet keeps the switch “off.” When opened, the magnet moves away, the circuit is broken, and this signals the device to power on and play.

    • Physical Switch Method: The act of opening the brochure presses or releases a physical button, completing the circuit and turning the device on.

6. The Speaker

  • What it is: A small, flat speaker.

  • Its Role: To provide audio for the video. Most brochures also include a headphone jack for private listening.

7. The Charging Port

    • What it is: A Micro-USB or, in newer models, a USB-C port.

    • Its Role: To recharge the internal battery before distribution. It’s often hidden behind a small, discreet flap in the print.

Working principle of video brochure

  1. At Rest (Closed): The brochure is closed. The activation switch (e.g., the reed switch) is held in the “off” position by the embedded magnet. The entire electronic system is in a deep sleep or completely powered off state, conserving battery.

  2. The Trigger (Opening): The recipient opens the brochure. This physical action moves the magnet away from the reed switch (or releases a physical button).

  3. Power On & Boot: The change in the switch’s state completes the electrical circuit, sending power from the battery to the PCB. The media player chip instantly boots up—this is very fast because it runs simple firmware, not a full OS.

  4. Video Playback: The chip reads the first instruction in its firmware, which is typically “play the video file from the memory storage.” It retrieves the video data, decodes it, and sends the video signal to the screen and the audio signal to the speaker.

  5. Continuous Playback: The video will typically play on a loop until the brochure is closed or the battery runs out. Some models may have a proximity sensor to pause playback when no one is looking to save power, or a simple on/off button.

  6. Shutdown (Closing): When the recipient closes the brochure, the magnet comes back near the reed switch, breaking the circuit (or the button is pressed again), and the device instantly powers down, ready for the next use.

Buyer FAQ: How a Video Brochure Works in Production

Useful answers for buyers who want to understand playback, charging and sampling before ordering.

Does the video start automatically when the brochure is opened?

Yes. Most video brochures use a magnetic switch so the video starts when the cover opens and stops when it closes. This is the most common setup for sales kits, invitations and direct presentations.

Can the video be updated after we receive the units?

Yes. Most units can be updated through the USB cable unless you request locked content for a fixed campaign. We can also preload the final video and test playback before shipment.

How are the battery and charging handled?

The brochure includes a rechargeable battery matched to the screen size and expected playback use. We normally test charging and playback during production, and we can advise on a more suitable battery option if your campaign needs longer demo time.

What are the MOQ and usual lead time?

MOQ can start from a sample. After design confirmation, bulk production is usually about 10-12 days, and shipping time depends on the destination and freight method.
